Today we took a trip to Media City, in Manchester. Media City is where the BBC is currently located, so we got to tour the BBC which was really exciting, along with a trip to tour the University of Salford.
The University of Salford is another school that Point Park has partnered with, allowing students to study abroad there. The university it seems to have a lot of focus on and strength in the media, and students that want to go into a media field. As we toured the campus, I was reminded a lot of Point Park’s broadcasting studios in the University Center, and of course, our wonderful Center for Media Innovation. It was really cool to see that students here were learning the same things, using the same kind of equipment, doing the same kind of work, etc here that we do it back home. It really made me realize that media is something that is universal and that the education I’m getting is as well. I always have a slight fear of my future, but this helped ease my mind.
After our time at Salford University, we walked across the street to the BBC for an immersive tour. The BBC, or the British Broadcasting Corporation, is a British public service broadcaster. It is the world’s oldest broadcasting organization, as well as the largest employed broadcaster in the world. The BBC was originally in London but it moved here in 2012 to media city. On our tour, we got to see a lot of different radio and TV studios where people actually filmed and recorded, places that I have seen many a time on the internet. It was really exciting to see in real life.
I really enjoyed today, it gave me a lot of confidence and optimism for my future in media, as well as the future of media itself.
