Day 11: Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Thursday, May 16, 2019

Im glad that our last day was free and I’m even more glad I took the day to explore by myself. All I really did was walk around, but it was just so beautiful.

Being a Harry Potter nerd, I headed over to Greyfriars Kirkyard. There I was able to see the headstones that influenced many names in Harry Potter like Thomas Riddell, William McGonagall, and Elizabeth Moodie.

Going into the graveyard, I had no clue where I was going, so I just wandered around. So many people were just hanging out there. Sitting on the walls, eating lunch, reading in the grass. It was crazy to see so many people spending their free time in a graveyard, but then again, I was too. Plus, I really couldn’t blame them. There was lush, bright green grass, vibrant gardens, and a lovely view of the town

.

During my journey I also found a statue of a dog which I thought was odd. However, when I read the plaque, I couldn’t help but smile. The dog was called Greyfriars Bobby. In 1858 the dog followed the remains of his master to the graveyard and lingered near the spot until the dog died in 1872. What a loyal boy!

I continued to walk around, shop, and take pictures until it was time to get ready for our spooky ghost tour! I was so excited for the tour and it got even better when we went underground. Being is a small, old, dirty Blair Street Vaults really added to the fear factor.

The vaults were used to for taverns, and workshops for tradesmen. Later, they became the go to place for the homeless and for illegal activity and let me tell you, that place is CREEEEEPY.

I had the time of my life in Scotland and in every other place we went on this International Media trip. I made great friends (some whose names I didn’t even know when we got to the airport that first day) had so many adventures and learned so many things. What a life changing experience.
