Day 10: Fringe and Obscurities!

Wednesday, May 15, 2019

Today was our last day of media visits! It was very bitter sweet. While I loved getting to listen to people who work in the creative field and I did learn a lot, I was very happy that I didn’t need to dress business casual anymore. I just really hate dress pants.

Our first visit was to the Festival Fringe Society. The Fringe is a HUGE festival that has been around since 1947. For three weeks every August the Fringe completely takes over Edinburgh to showcase arts and culture from all over the world.

The entire time Oliver Davis, the head of marketing at the Fringe, was talking to us I was flabbergasted. Anything goes and everyone is welcome. Last year the Fringe had 32,912 participants and they sold 2.84 million tickets.

The challenging thing is, is that they are uncharge of selling the idea of Fringe, not the shows and performers. Not to mention, with the target market being everyone, how are you supposed to create a marketing plan? I can’t even imagine trying to organize something as large as the Fringe. Absolutely crazy.

After the Fringe we visited WhiteSpace to talked to photographer, David N. Anderson. He was interesting to hear from because he told us that now, he needs to take pictures with social media in mind. This means he needs to take pictures with the idea of how it will fit on Instagram or look on a phone. That is easier said than done. I alway have problems with picture I put on Instagram looking weird or cutting people off because of the photo size restrictions.

The walk home from WhiteSpace was beautiful, of course. I still can’t believe how luck we have been with the weather.

The rest of our day was free, so my friends and I went to Camera Obscura and Illusions Museum. The Camera Obscura overlooked Edinburgh and it was a lot of fun spying on the people below. Again, glad the sky was clear so we could really experience projection of the device.

We explored for an hour or so stopping to take tons of pictures. The museum wasn’t something I would have thought about going to, but I’m so glad Taylor told us about it! It was really a blast.

Tomorrow is our last day and then it’s back to the states. Can’t wait to see what the day holds!
