Finding the Real Strawberry Field: Day 7

Exploring Liverpool and the Beatles

The next day we had the morning to ourselves before heading out for a Beatles Tour at 1:00 p.m. I spent the morning at a cute little pastry shop where I just reflected on the trip so far and just enjoyed a quiet morning to myself.

Around 1:00 p.m. the entire class gathered together and left for a Beatles tour. The Beatles were an English rock band that formed in Liverpool in the 1960s and soon became a global sensation. The group was made of members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Star.

The tour took us to different spots in the Beatles timeline including some of their childhood homes, the place where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met, Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, and even some of the places passed when Paul McCartney filmed his Carpool Karaoke.

Penny Lane

The one place we visited was Penny Lane, the real street in Liverpool that Paul McCartney based his famous song off of. The lyrics in the song mention different sights and the people that McCartney recalled from his childhood living in the city.

Strawberry Field

Another famous place we visited on the Beatles tour was Strawberry Fields (spoiler: it’s not an actual field of strawberries). The song Strawberry Fields Forever was written by John Lennon who drew inspiration from his childhood memories of playing in the gardens at Strawberry Field. The actual location of Strawberry Field is actually a Salvation Army children’s home near to where Lennon grew up.

The tour guide when on the tell us that John Lennon grew up in a family without an influential father figure and was often looked down upon by the other kids in his neighborhood and it was only at the Salvation Army children’s home did he feel comfortable because the kids didn’t ask about his parents.
