My name is Kari Dettorre, but if you know me you can call me Karol. I am a sophomore student at Point Park University, and after a lot of back and forth between majors within the School of Communication, I finally settled on Multimedia, my original intended major. During the spring semester of my sophomore year, I was lucky enough to take the International Media course. The way the course is set up, we study a country throughout the semester and then after the semester closes, we actually go visit the country of study.
This year we are taking a trip across the pond to the United Kingdom, and I could not be more excited. I have never been out of the country before (unless you count crossing over the US/Canadian “border” during a Maid of the Mist tour at Niagara Falls), so I was already excited, but as a huge music fan I feel like all of my childhood and teenage dreams are coming true! Let’s be honest, my adult dreams are coming true as well. Although I was not alive for the British Invasion, I grew up listening to the bands that were a part of it, and as I got older I fell in love with more artists from the UK, so I formed an interest in the countries they came from. I’m really looking forward to seeing iconic locations from the UK music scene, sightseeing, and just experiencing each town/city that we visit.
On top of that, I’m really looking forward to the media visits that have been planned for us, specifically the House of Hearst. Hearst is a magazine publishing company based in London, which is something I am very interested in. Hearst publishes big names such as Elle, Good Housekeeping, and Harper’s Bazaar, to name a few, so I think that media visit is going to be very interesting and informative. I also want to make my own mini magazine, so I hope I can get advice from their employees, and maybe even make some contacts there.
I think this trip is going to be really exciting and a great time. I hope that throughout my travels, I make a ton of great memories and gain life experience. I also hope to make some contacts overseas, as well as find inspiration for my work.
